How to Care for Your Heavyweight Hoodie: The Complete Guide
Why Heavyweight Hoodies Need Special Care
A premium heavyweight hoodie — typically 380gsm or above — is a different beast from your standard mall-brand pullover. The dense, brushed fleece that gives it that structured drape and luxurious hand-feel also means it holds more water, takes longer to dry, and responds differently to heat than lighter fabrics.
At Instinctive, our hoodies are constructed from 380gsm brushed fleece with raw-edge detailing and vintage washes. Each piece is designed to develop character over time — but that only happens when you care for it properly.
Washing: The Golden Rules
1. Always Turn Inside Out
Before every wash, flip your hoodie inside out. This protects the outer face from abrasion against other garments, preserves any printed or embroidered details, and reduces pilling on the exterior surface.
2. Cold Water Only (30°C / 86°F Maximum)
Hot water is the enemy of heavyweight cotton. It causes fiber shrinkage, weakens the yarn structure, and accelerates color fading — especially on vintage-washed pieces. Cold water cleans effectively while preserving the fabric's integrity.
3. Gentle Cycle, Mild Detergent
Use a gentle or delicate cycle to minimize mechanical stress on the dense fibers. Choose a mild liquid detergent — powder detergents can leave residue trapped in heavyweight fleece. Never use bleach or fabric softener. Softeners coat fibers and reduce the natural texture that makes heavyweight fleece special.
4. Wash With Like Colors
This is especially critical for our vintage-washed and sun-faded pieces. Dark garments can transfer dye in the first few washes. Group similar tones together.
Drying: Patience Pays Off
Air Dry Whenever Possible
Lay your hoodie flat on a clean, dry towel or hang it on a wide-shouldered hanger (not a wire hanger — it'll stretch the shoulders). Heavyweight fleece takes 12-24 hours to air dry completely, but the payoff is zero shrinkage and maximum softness.
If You Must Use a Dryer
Set it to the lowest heat possible (or tumble dry with no heat). Remove the hoodie while it's still slightly damp and finish air drying. High heat is the single fastest way to destroy a premium hoodie — it shrinks fibers, hardens the brushed interior, and can cause irreversible damage to raw-edge details.
Storage Tips
- Fold, don't hang long-term. Heavyweight fleece can stretch at the shoulders if left on a hanger for weeks.
- Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid direct sunlight which can fade colors unevenly.
- Give it room. Don't compress heavyweight hoodies under stacks of other clothes — the brushed interior needs airflow to maintain its loft.
Dealing With Pilling
Some pilling is natural on brushed fleece, especially in high-friction areas (underarms, sides). Use a fabric shaver or sweater stone to gently remove pills. Don't pull them off by hand — this can damage the surrounding fibers.
The Bottom Line
A well-cared-for heavyweight hoodie actually gets better with age. The fleece softens, the vintage wash develops more character, and the structured silhouette holds its shape for years. Treat it right, and it'll reward you.
