Fabric Guide
Understanding Fabric Weight: What GSM Means for Your Streetwear
What Is GSM?
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter — it's the universal measurement for fabric density. Take a one-meter-by-one-meter square of fabric, weigh it in grams, and that's your GSM. Simple in concept, but the implications for how a garment looks, feels, and wears are enormous.
The Weight Spectrum
| Category | GSM Range | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Lightweight | 150–250 gsm | Summer tees, athletic wear |
| Midweight | 250–350 gsm | Standard hoodies, sweatshirts |
| Heavyweight | 350–450 gsm | Premium streetwear, structured pieces |
| Ultra-Heavyweight | 450+ gsm | Specialty outerwear, blanket hoodies |
Why Heavyweight Matters in Streetwear
Structure & Drape
Heavyweight fabric holds its shape. A 380gsm hoodie doesn't cling to your body or collapse when you move — it creates a deliberate, architectural silhouette. This is why premium streetwear brands gravitate toward heavier weights: the garment looks intentional, not accidental.
Durability
More grams per square meter means more fiber density. Denser fabric resists pilling, holds up to repeated washing, and maintains its structure over years of wear. A well-made 380gsm hoodie at year three will still look better than a 220gsm hoodie at month three.
The "Hand Feel" Factor
Pick up a heavyweight hoodie and you immediately feel the difference. There's a substance to it — a weight that communicates quality before you even put it on. This tactile experience is what separates premium streetwear from fast fashion.
GSM Isn't Everything
Here's what most guides won't tell you: GSM alone doesn't determine quality. Two 380gsm hoodies can feel completely different depending on:
- Fiber composition — 100% cotton vs. cotton-poly blend vs. French terry
- Yarn quality — ring-spun vs. open-end yarn
- Knit construction — brushed fleece vs. loopback terry
- Finishing — garment-dyed, enzyme-washed, brushed interior
At Instinctive, we use 380gsm brushed fleece with a cotton-dominant blend. The brushed interior provides softness against skin, while the dense outer face creates that structured, premium drape.
What About T-Shirts?
For tees, the sweet spot is different. A 180-220gsm tee feels substantial without being stiff. Our Raw Edge Boxy Tee uses a 260gsm non-shrink cotton that delivers heavyweight structure in a tee format — boxy, substantial, and built to hold its shape wash after wash.
How to Shop by GSM
When evaluating streetwear pieces, use this framework:
- Under 250gsm: Fine for summer basics, but expect less structure and shorter lifespan
- 250-350gsm: Solid everyday weight — good for layering and moderate climates
- 350-450gsm: Premium territory — structured silhouettes, year-round wearability, built to last
- 450+gsm: Specialty use — very warm, very heavy, limited seasonal wear
The 380gsm range hits the sweet spot: heavy enough to feel premium and hold structure, light enough to wear comfortably across three seasons.
